Thank you so much this really helped me because my dad is telling me I’m not trying hard enough to be marching on the field but in reality I work every day especially during marching season to just keep my spot. And now he tells me if I don’t make varsity this year he’s pulling me out of it. This really really helps and keeps me going.

This year I’m a freshman and honestly band scared me. Band camp drained me and pushed me to my limits so many times. But I love band. We just got finished Ishtar marching and are moving onto concert season. And I will say with it being my first ever marching season, it was incredible. With only being here for a little less than a year it feels like home, the memories I’ve made, the friends I’ve made, would of never happened without band and I am forever grateful. Can’t wait for concert season and cannot wait for three more years of this ❤ (also our practices were in the MORNING. Let’s just say practicing outside for hours than having to go to school right after wasn’t fun)

I quit marching band cause i knew my limits. I really enjoyed the more classical feel of my instrument. i think i would've enjoyed it better if I was on a stage playing a suite from the nutcracker or something, not marching on a field or practicing under the sun. Unfortunately, i live in a state that has a very big marching band scene, so i had no chance in continuing my playing. Besides, private lessons are expensive, and finding a group nearby to practice with is hard. So this one is for all the band kids: keep it up yall. Yall are strong, yall have fun. Dont quit like me, but dont force yourself to stay either. Know your limits.

Last year my junior year. Everything after a long rehearsal before are state finals performance that night. Everything payed off as we marched off that field as state champions hearing the announcer say “With a score of 88.12 Sebastian river high school” everyone erupted as we just took it all and earned the title of “state champions” at that point I remembered why I do marching band (I can’t remember the score exactly so I just took my best guess of what we actually got) Love from a bass trombonist

I usually hate going to my rehearsals, but at the end of the day, whenever we perform and see it out on the field, it looks absolutely amazing and i don’t regret any rehearsals ever. They may suck in the moment, but oh boy do they matter. and what matters most is the amount of people you meet, and how much support you get from people all around the state. ❤

I watched this video exactly 1 year ago as a freshman. The day before band camp. Not knowing what to expect at all. I'm just a little small fry freshman on bass drum 4 that barely knows anything that I'm getting myself in to. Watching this video now going into sophomore year the day before band camp once again, I kept thinking in my head how relatable all of this stuff is. (Exept the part with the props. We had no props lol.) But yes. There was lots of sweat, lots of torture, probably tears, but most importantly, lots of fun. You know that if you just pay attention and ignore how hot it is outside, you will do just fine for the rest of the season. Anyone that has done marching band or dci or indoor percussion should know that THIS is the hardest part. And other than a wicked sunburn, only good will come out of it. And who knows. Maybe that alto saxophone that keeps running into you will become your best friend for the rest of the season. Maybe that one super hard drill chart will become the coolest part of the show and will get you many points. But no matter what happens, no matter how good or bad your show is, the crowd will cheer for you.

Hi everyone, my name is Leontii Popov and I’m a graduate student from Jack Britt High School from Fayetteville, NC class of 2022. I was an active member of marching band for 4 years as a saxophone player. My freshman year of 2018-19 is overfilled with exciting emotions, bunch of drama and with too many mistakes since our pre show had too much of choreography. Section leaders were too rough and loud with instruments especially brass were always the loudest of all. My freshman year show was One Day I’ll Fly Away. Looking at saved videos I realized how Nasty and slow it was despite of the size of the band in class 4A. 2019-20 year as a sophomore was way better. However there were no section leaders since our band director Timothy Parsons have decided to skip a year without section leaders after what happened with 2018 season. Again: Upper junior and senior class band veteran members who were in charge of the section (not section leaders) they’ve confused so many band members like they have no idea which drill set is correct at a spot or which was wrong. I marched an alto saxophone for my 2nd year as a sophomore and I wanted to march baritone saxophone during my upcoming junior year. At the same time I’ve made my final decision in my head to become a BETTER section leader since 2020 is expected to have 110 band students for even better show till Covid-19 hit unexpectedly. Last competition of October 26th 2019 was at Bands of America Regionals in Liberty University at Lynchburg, VA. I’ll never forget this moment where I’ve met a serious crush at one girl who was one of color guard members from Cary HS Marching Band from Cary, NC. She was a freshman who was a color guard member and I’ve found out her name 2 years later on Instagram. Her name is Hanne Hansen:) I’ve also made quite few of good friends of mine from different local band competitions and I still keep up in touch with them! 2021 despite of hard Covid-19 pandemic for all of us our band lost around 26 seniors out of 110 students. I’ve had a very difficult decision to either tryout for drum major or March 1 more year with baritone saxophone so I’ve decided to have my second chance of becoming a section leader in charge of saxophones. The schedule of 2020 had been moved to 2021 year and I was so disappointed out of 5 schools we were supposed to go to and one of them we wanted to go there at Sanderson High School Band Competition in NC. My senior year was down to 3 local competitions which flew by too quick and wished to spend plenty of good times at Sanderson HS band competition since a lot of exciting bands performing there especially later on I’ve realized my crush Hanne Hansen as a Color Guard Captain performed there along with Cary HS Band during her junior year in fall 2021. Eventually I never felt disappointed or it didn’t mattered about having 3 competitions since the last one being performed at South Columbus HS Band Competition on October 24th 2021 and we haven’t won any grand championship since 2017. Honestly if you want to join marching band never in a million years feel shy to make new bonds not only in music but never feel such regret that you haven’t met up with any friends because of shyness. Show them what you’re capable of not only through hard work and in dedication. First step is always hard towards making progress especially when it comes facing stuff with section leaders. Have fun in band and be sharp with confidence. At one of the competitions I guarantee you that you’ll feel a very rare force of confidence and the screams of the crowd will make you feel like you’re about to cross the finish line during the last measures of the whole show run!!

My problem is that i do everything i can during marching season but when i am burnt out by concert my band director queations my commitment. During the entire time i keeped telling myself that of i kept going it would mean something bigger but hearing how they doubted my commitment to the band just killed me and i don't know if it is worth it to keep going but i juat have to try one more time so if things don't get anu better next year then i don't know what i am going to do.

I had started ever since the beggining of the year and as a begginer, I didn't know band camp existed at the time. This is where they reherse and start the marching stuff. As a fellow begginer, I didn't know how to play or how to march. I was straight to the feild with no one teaching me or how to play the instrument. 2 months later, I was tired and I was ready to give up. I cried multiple times because I hate making mistakes and had anxiety (thank you, mother.) I thought band was for me cause I love music and being in a community where I could be my weird, shy, but loud self. But, I didn't because there was so many judgemental, serious people at the time and it just give off a weird vibe. 2 girls in my class started to talk shit about me behind my back cause I was being a cry-baby and it just made me even more depressing. Later, I found people who WERE ACTUALLY NICE, helped me geto out of my comfort zone, and made me feel where I belonged. Also, they also hate those 2 girls so they would always comfort me and talk how bad they are. After 4 months later, I taught myself how to play the flute, marched pretty well, and made new friends and memories. As I got into band more, I found out that the people are just like. Just a bunch of nerds just trying to do their best and also trying to find a place where they belong. This made me relize of how I am not alone and I could finally share my burden...Band rehersals was just a pain in the ass but, made new memories and inside jokes. I would never traded that for the world...AND WE LOVE OUR BAND DIRECTOR SO YAH! If you are trying to feel a part of something, I totally recommend doing marching band...It could be a bit hard at first but don't worry. Just practice your music and don't give up :D

Honestly everybody thinks marching band is easy, but it is far from easy. The mental capacity to memorize a lot of different things at once, at the same time, while making sure the music is clean and perfect, while making sure you’re covered down with everyone near you…it’s extremely difficult. Not just anyone can do it and succeed.
